Hi all! I’m back from vacation and reposting my invitation to join me for my weekly office hour-type-thing starting this Thursday at noon Pacific. Read on for info or go directly to my Luma to register:
In addition to my work as a grant writer and strategic planner, I am a creative writer. This is really how I learned the power of writing alone-but-together.
Of course, there will be parts of your work that need to be done as a collaborative effort, bouncing ideas off of one another, ironing out methodological wrinkles, talking through the logic of the proposed aims. But then, when it comes down to it, the writing itself is mostly a solitary exercise.

In my creative writing practice, there are three main ways I work “with” others, and I think they can be valuable no matter what you’re writing – novels or poetry or grants.
First, is of course any kind of education, be that attending a book launch to enrolling in a craft course. Second is a workshop group – three of us exchange ten pages of work every two weeks, and we meet every two weeks to provide feedback. Third is co-writing – a designated time in person or online where you know others will also be, we do a super brief check in to state our goals, and then we write together for a set amount of time before a short check-in at the end.
If you’re reading this, you’re doing number one! And being a scientist is always about learning, so I’m guessing you’re set there.
For numbers two and three, maybe you can find some colleagues who you trust and like to exchange work with or set up co-writing time with.
If you don’t have such colleagues, not to worry! I’m going to start a weekly virtual co-working space. It will be donation-based at first, and at some point be available to paid subscribers (whenever I switch on that option). For the first forty-five minutes, we’ll be in silence just working on whatever writing project we have (yes, that could be email). Then, I’ll be available for thirty minutes as a kind of office hours, if you have questions about anything that’s coming up for you, or a specific problem you want to tackle.
Register below on Luma for the first session in October. If you follow my calendar there, you’ll see the series of weekly options thereafter. Hope to see you there!
